Big 12 moves closer to expansion. Or not
The muddle surrounding the Big 12 and its anticipated expansion has grown a little clearer.
But only a little.
The University of Nevada Las Vegas no longer is in the running to join the Power 5 conference, the school has announced. In a joint statement, UNLV’s president and athletic director said: “We thank the leadership of the Big 12 for its consideration and wish the conference the very best.”
San Diego State, East Carolina and New Mexico also failed to make the cut, according to multiple reports.
Big 12 presidents decided this summer to explore expansion but did not specify if two, four or even any members would be added.
As many as 20 schools have been considered. According to various reports — all citing unnamed sources — that number has been narrowed to between six and 12.
Brigham Young University, Houston, Cincinnati and Southern Methodist are among the high-profile programs still thought to be under consideration.
