A disastrous season for Dez Bryant has officially come to an end, four days before a disastrous season for his team also comes to an end.

Dallas Cowboys Coach Jason Garrett announced Wednesday that the star receiver has been put on injured reserve and will have surgery on his ankle and foot.

After signing a five-year, $70-million contract during the off-season, Bryant fractured his right foot during the season opener and missed the next five games. He was hampered by foot, ankle and knee issues the rest of the season and did not play Sunday in Buffalo for the Cowboys.

“You know, we really try to evaluate our players’ health independent of who we’re playing and when we’re playing and where we’re playing and what the records are,” Garrett said Tuesday, explaining why Bryant didn’t travel with the team to Buffalo. “And that was the case with Dez. His foot and his ankle have been bothering him for a few weeks now and just thought it was the right thing for him to do was not to play.”

Bryant finishes the season with the lowest numbers of his six-year NFL career -- 31 catches for 401 yards for three touchdowns in nine games. The Cowboys, who were 12-4 a year ago, also played without quarterback Tony Romo for much of the season and are 4-11 entering Sunday’s finale against Washington.
