Jonathan Quick update, Matt Greene to go on long-term injured reserve

NEW YORK -- Back surgery put Kings defenseman Matt Greene out for almost all of last season, and now he is expected to miss a significant period of time with an unrelated issue, an upper-body injury.

The Kings were preparing paperwork on Wednesday to put Greene on long-term injured reserve, General Manager Dean Lombardi said in an interview. That mechanism is designed to give the team salary cap relief and opens up a roster spot.

In the aftermath of the Kings’ recent spate of injuries -- the most recent occuring to franchise goalie Jonathan Quick in Buffalo on Tuesday night -- the team will be calling up goalie Martin Jones and left wing Tanner Pearson from their American Hockey League affiliate in Manchester, N.H.

They will join the team for morning skate here as the Kings face the New York Islanders on Thursday night. Quick, who was injured late in overtime against the Sabres, is heading back to Los Angeles for evaluation, including an MRI examination.

Lombardi was not sure if the injury was to Quick’s groin. Of course, everything is speculation until the test results come back.

“We’re not going to know until the MRI,” Lombardi said. “Obviously, it didn’t look good. The trainers told me walking out [last night] it was not good. They don’t know until they get in there and find out what it is ... nobody knows.”

Left wing Kyle Clifford is also home in Los Angeles with a head injury he suffered Saturday against the Canucks. Forward Jeff Carter, who went on injured reserve two weeks ago, will see the doctors later this week for an update on his injured foot, Lombardi said.

“We’ve got a nice little gong show going right now,” Lombardi said.
