The PGA Tour promotes Jay Monahan, who could be next commissioner

It looks like the PGA Tour has lined up its next commissioner.

The new boss-in-waiting appears to be Jay Monahan, who was promoted to deputy commissioner on Tuesday. That puts him in place to eventually succeed Commissioner Tim Finchem.

Monahan “will move into the Office of the Commissioner and report directly to me, working closely on the entire scope of business operations and strategy,” Finchem said in a statement, adding: “Jay’s new role in this key leadership position will help continue our momentum.”

Finchem held the deputy job until taking over the tour in the mid-1990s. Now two decades into his tenure, he has a four-year extension through 2016.

Monahan joined the tour in 2008 and had most recently been serving as chief marketing officer.
