Tiger Woods misses cut a week after winning PGA Tour event
Tiger Woods missed the cut at the rain-plagued Greenbrier Classic in White Sulphur Springs, W.Va. And it sounds quite odd to hear him say, “It happens, you know? You miss cuts out here.”
His second-round 69 left him at even-par 140 for the tournament, one shot too many to advance to the third round Saturday afternoon. Phil Mickelson joined him on the sideline, the two now having a few more days to prepare for the British Open, which begins July 19.
It’s the third time that Woods, who won the AT&T National last week at Congressional, has failed to make a cut a week after winning a tournament. The other two times were in 2005 at the Disney and in 2009 at the British Open. The previous two times he had taken a week off after winning. Not this time.
“I didn’t quite have it,” Woods said.
Playing partner Webb Simpson, the U.S. Open champion, said Woods’ distance control was the main factor.
“He actually played really well,” said Simpson, who leads at nine-under after the second round was complete Saturday morning. “He just had some distance-control problems and, you know, it wasn’t an issue last week. His game looks good to me.”
For Woods, it was only the ninth time he has missed a PGA Tour cut.
“I drove it really good today and I just did not have the feel for the distances,” Woods said. “The ball was just going forever.
“I know it’s hot. I know we’re at altitude. My sand wedge is going 142, 145; wedge is 160. These are numbers that I don’t normally hit. Some of the bigger guys hit those numbers, but I don’t. And I was really struggling to get the ball at the right number.”
