USC football: Tee Martin will provide view from coaches’ booth

Share

USC receivers coach Tee Martin has been on the field for games during his one-plus seasons with the Trojans.

But with offensive coordinator Clay Helton taking over play-calling duties for the Trojans on Thursday night against Arizona, Martin will move to the coaches’ booth in the press box to assist Helton.

“The booth is where I spent most of my [coaching] career,” said Martin, a former star quarterback at Tennessee who coached at Morehouse College, New Mexico and Kentucky before joining USC’s staff. “I’m actually getting back to a comfort zone for me where you can really see.”

In the aftermath of Lane Kiffin’s firing, Helton will move from the coaches’ booth to the field to be near interim coach Ed Orgeron and players. He will rely on Martin from above.

“Tee Martin has completed a lot more passes than me,” Helton said. “He has great vision reading coverages and can give you that information.”

USC is expected to be without All-American receiver Marqise Lee against Arizona. Lee has not practiced since suffering a knee sprain against Arizona State on Sept. 28.

Sophomore Nelson Agholor and third-year sophomore Victor Blackwell were the only scholarship receivers that made it through complete practices this week.

Senior De’Von Flournoy is nursing an ankle sprain. Freshman Darreus Rogers performed limited drills for the first time since suffering a high ankle sprain against Boston College on Sept. 14.

Junior George Farmer suffered a season-ending knee injury during spring practice and freshman Steven Mitchell suffered a season-ending knee injury during summer workouts.
