Watch NBA’s Amir Johnson throw mouthguard at ref after ejection
Look for Toronto’s Amir Johnson to be fined and suspended after he threw his mouthguard at referee David Jones following his ejection from the Raptors’ 92-74 loss to the Portland Trail Blazers on Monday night.
In a strange scene, Johnson and Jones played tug-of-war with the ball after a Portland free throw in the third quarter. Jones ejected Johnson, who tried to follow Jones toward the scorer’s table. While being restrained by teammates, Johnson removed his mouthguard and threw it at Jones, hitting him in the back.
“I guess the ref didn’t let me have the ball so we kind of got into a tug of war,” Johnson said. “No words were really said and he rejected me out of the game and I kind of lost my cool from there.”
Johnson said he has a habit of rubbing the ball before handing it to the ref during free throws and that that was all he was trying to do when Jones grabbed the ball.
Johnson comes across as pretty childish in the video of the incident, above, and after the game he seemed to agree.
“I think it was just really childish. It was something that didn’t need to happen,” Johnson said. “I lost my cool and I apologize on my part.”
