Much of the focus during USC’s training camp has been on the new fast-paced offense Coach Steve Sarkisian has installed.

But the 3-4 defense also is new.

Coordinator Justin Wilcox got his first chance to watch the Trojans in a game-type setting during a scrimmage Wednesday night at the Coliseum.

He saw positives — several players made plays — and negatives — too many penalties — as the Trojans prepared for the Aug. 30 opener against Fresno State.

“There’s plenty for us to work on,” he said afterward. “There’s no doubt we’re not ready.”

USC was without defensive linemen Leonard Williams and Antwaun Woods, who were held out because of injuries.

Cornerback Chris Hawkins and safety Gerald Bowman intercepted passes and the defense also caused a fumble.
