Boys’ basketball: Chino Hills is still fun to watch, entertaining and scoring 100 points

Lonzo Ball has moved on to UCLA but Chino Hills is still scoring lots of points and putting on a show.

In its opening game of the Fairfax tournament on Wednesday night, the Huskies rolled to a 114-96 win over Santa Monica.

Sophomore LaMelo Ball scored 30 points. Senior Eli Scott had 26 points. Sophomore Onyeka Okongwu had 24 points and lots of rebounds. Andre Ball had 17 points. The Huskies won despite not having LiAngelo Ball available this week because of an ankle sprain.

Santa Monica received 30 points from junior Rip Economou.

Chino Hills’ victory sets up a quarterfinal showdown on Thursday night at 6 o’clock against Santa Ana Mater Dei, a team the Huskies beat by 48 points during last season’s state playoffs. Mater Dei requested to be put into Chino Hills’ bracket for this tournament and now gets what it wanted.

The Monarchs defeated Loyola, 86-64. Spencer Freedman scored 27 points.

Santa Margarita was the most impressive team on Tuesday, defeating Alemany, 104-46. Sophomore Jake Kyman led a balanced attack with 17 points.

Redondo received 17 points from Ryse Williams in an 84-71 win over Calabasas. Redondo will face Santa Margarita on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.

In Wednesday’s quarterfinals, Corona Centennial will play Brentwood at 6 p.m., followed by Long Beach Poly against Crespi at 7:30 p.m.
