British children's fantasy author Diana Wynne Jones died last month while I was busy reading "The Emerald Atlas" for review, so it was inevitable that her spirit should haunt my reading. Jones is often cited as the forerunner of J.K. Rowling as the queen of contemporary fantasy for children, and "The Emerald Atlas" fits snugly in this category.
