T.C. Scotton gained 181 yards in 16 carries and scored on runs of 46 and 17 yards for Flintridge Prep.Jeff Yun added 33 yards, including a 12-yard score, in five carries, and Wes Ouchi rushed five times for 44 yards, including an 18-yard touchdown, and Ramses Barden made three catches for 105 yards, including one for 77 yards from quarterback Greg Sherman for the Rebels. Linebacker Jesse Fleece led Flintridge Prep’s defense with 10 tackles and Mike Gadel intercepted a pass. Santa Clara is 0-2.

Fountain Valley 28, San Clemente 7
Fountain Valley was viewed as a good barometer for the South Coast League race this season.

The Barons opened the season playing back to back game against Mission Viejo and San Clemente, teams that are expected to battle for the South Coast League title this season.

But the Barons proved again Saturday night that they are more than a good gauge for another league race, amassing 306 yards rushing in an upset over No. 18 San Clemente at Huntington Beach High.

The victory came on the heels of last week’s 14-13 loss to No. 2 Mission Viejo, when the Barons came up short on a late two-point conversion that would have ended the Diablos 29-game winning streak.

``We tore it up,’’ said Leo Talavou, Fountain Valley’s 6-3, 325-pound offensive tackle.

Fountain Valley took a 21-0 lead early in the fourth quarter on a seven-yard touchdown pass from Chris Debowski to Mike Musso, which capped a 15-play, 99-yard drive.

``On that 99-yard drive, they were dying,’’ said Talavou.

After the Tritons recovered its own fumble in the endzone to cut the lead to 21-7, Bryan Riehm answered with a 44-yard touchdown run to put the Barons back up by 21 points.

Riehm finished with 94 yards in 13 carries. Ryan Best led the Barons with 113 yards rushing in 13 carries.

San Clemente, which returned several starters from a team that reached the Southern Section Division II semifinals last season, was held to 76 total yards in the first half and 215 for the game. Triton running back Cheyne Verhagen, who rushed for more than 1,600 yards last season, did not practice all week due to a knee injury and was held to three yards in seven carries.

``We need leadership on offense,’’ said Verhagen. ``We’re trying to find ourselves. Once we get going, we’ll be hard to stop.’’

Garden Grove Pacifica 38, Pomona 7
Jaymes Franco gained 142 yards and scored on runs of 15 and 17 yards for Garden Grove Pacifica (1-1) at Bolsa Grande High. Also for the Mariners, Brandon Harper was 11 of 15 passing for 111 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions and Steve Heller had four catches for 50 yards, including a 24-yard touchdown reception.

Shane Bell completed 13 of 23 passes for 257 yards including touchdown passes of 43, 49 and 39 yards and Josh Maunu had four receptions totaling 93 yards with one touchdown to lead Granite Hills (2-0). Nathan Hall gained 84 yards in 2 carries for Big Bear (0-2).

Senior quarterback Denny Warden was 16 of 23 passing for 168 yards and he also rushed for a five-yard touchdown for Brethren Christian (1-0-1) at Linfield High. Warden also intercepted a pass at midfield on the last play of the game, which did not go to a tie-breaker because it was nonleague competition.Jeramy Knepper had 12 catches for 74 yards and Ryan Marsh had five catches for 55 yards and also scored on an 11-yard run for the Warriors. Marsh also had an interception.

Bonita’s defense held South El Monte to 68 total yards, zero passing yards and four first downs.

Buena quarterback Skyler Smith threw a five-yard touchdown pass to Brandon Michel with 11:14 remaining in the game to give Buena a win over host Thousand Oaks (0-2). Buena running back Lovelle Brown had 97 yards and one touchdown in six carries, and teammate Korey Dixon had 85 yards in 13 carries. Thousand Oaks quarterback Chris Owens went 20 for 34 for 241 yards with four interceptions. He threw one touchdown, a 29-yard pass to receiver Matt Luft. Buena (1-1) led 15-0 at the end of the first quarter, but running back Jack Boger helped get the Lancers back in the game. Boger finished with 102 yards on 19 carries.

Senior Darnell Brisco had two interceptions to lead Cerritos Valley Christian (1-1) past host Norwalk (1-1).

Senior Ronnie Steele ran the ball 19 times for 192 yards and three touchdowns to lead Chaparral (2-0) over host West Valley (0-2). Quarterback Matt Ticich was 14 of 22 for 247 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 58 yards and three touchdowns in eight carries for Chaparral. West Valley running back Ryan Subith had 20 carries for two touchdowns, including a 79-yard score. Sophomore Mario Orejel also had 10 carries for 103 yards and a 65-yard touchdown for West Valley.

Michael Bumpus had seven carries for 112 yards and one score, a 58-yard touchdown run, to lead host Culver City (2-1) over West Torrance (0-2).

Junior Chuck Wilson had two interceptions, blocked a PAT, rushed for 97 yards and two touchdowns and had 18 yards receiving to lead Linfield Christian (2-1) over visiting Fairmont Prep (2-1).

Long Beach Wilson 38, Paramount 13
Dion Myer carried 22 times for 259 yards and one touchdown and Dane Walker had 10 carries for 83 yards and a touchdown for host Long Beach Wilson (2-0).

Los Altos 22, La Habra 13
Senior running back Randall Brown rushed for 131 yards and one touchdown in 21 carries, but it was a 28-yard scoring reception that sealed the nonleague victory for Los Altos with 4:29 to go in a matchup of defending Southern Section champions at Los Altos.

Brown scored at the end of a three-play, 32-yard drive following a fumble by La Habra quarterback Daniel Morales to stretch the Conquerors’ precarious 15-13 edge to 21-13 midway through the fourth quarter. Daniel Hernandez’s point-after was good for the final margin.

La Habra (1-1), Southern Section Division IX champion last season, trailed Los Altos (2-0), the defending Division VI champion, 15-6, at halftime. But the Highlanders used a strong drive by Morales to pull within 15-13 with 1:40 to play in the third period.

Morales took the Highlanders 45 yards in seven plays, completing two passes for 24 yards and scoring on a three-yard run to close the gap. He finished nine of 16 passing for 99 yards with one touchdown and one interception before leaving the game with severe leg cramps with 2:47 to play.

La Habra had one last chance on its final series. With the aid of a personal foul penalty against Los Altos, La Habra drove to the Conquerors’ 31-yard line with a minute left, but UCLA-bound Brigham Harwell flattened La Habra backup quarterback Jesse Quesada for a nine-yard loss, and a last-ditch pass fell incomplete on the final play.

Monrovia 26, West Covina 14
Wide receiver Jesse Canada had three carries for 115 yards and two touchdown runs of 22 and 80 yards to lead Monrovia (2-0) over host West Covina (1-1). Monrovia junior Brandon Spicer had seven carries for 82 yards and a 44-yard touchdown run that tied the game in the third quarter. Monrovia outscored West Covina, 19-7, in the second half.

Oaks Christian 55, Village Christian 20
Aaron Ware rushed for 170 yards and touchdowns of 74 and 48 yards for host Oaks Christian (2-0). Teammate Marc Tyler, son of former UCLA and NFL running back Wendell Tyler, rushed for 65 yards in four carries, including a 49-yard scoring run.

Richard Owens rushed for 95 yards on 13 carries and two touchdowns to lead host Ontario Christian (2-0) over Whittier Christian (1-1).

Jared Nelson rushed for 241 yards and five touchdowns in 22 carries for visiting Paraclete (2-0). Nelson had scoring runs of three, 63, 12, four and 73 yards, all in the first first half.

Anthony Celestine of Ridgecrest Burroughs had three touchdowns, one on a 23-yard run, another on a 69-yard punt return, and the third coming off an interception return. Matt Williams added 111 yards on 11 carries for the Burros (3-0). Quartz Hill is 0-2

Riverside North 28, Fontana Kaiser 7
Dion Morton passed for 149 yards and two touchdowns to lead No. 8 North (2-0) at Fontana High.

Damon Morton, Dion’s twin, rushed for 24 yards, caught five passes for 62 yards and one touchdown and had 125 yards in returns, including a 94-yard run for a touchdown after a failed Kaiser field-goal attempt.

Running back Josh Barnett carried eight times for 80 yards and one touchdown for North, ranked No. 2 in Division V.

Rayvonne Gooden gained 98 yards in 22 carries for Kaiser (1-1), ranked No. 2 in Division VIII.

A 67-yard pass from Dion Morton to Damon Morton for an apparent touchdown on the first play of the game was called back because of a penalty. However, three plays later, Dion threw five yards to tailback E.J. Brown for a score.

Barnett added a touchdown on a three-yard run with 5:24 left in the first half. Two minutes later, following his interception, Dion Morton gave North a 21-0 lead on a seven-yard pass to Deylan Marrow.

Saddleback Valley Christian 35, Boron 14
Brian Harbin rushed for 265 yards on 22 carries and had touchdown runs of 68 and 70 yards in the third quarter for Saddleback Valley Christian (2-1). Coleman Fait completed four of eight passes for 101 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Boron is 0-3.

Santa Fe 49, Montebello 2
Senior quarterback Danny Banzet was 11of 16 for 220 yards and a 34-yard touchdown pass to lead Santa Fe (2-0) over host Montebello (1-1). Dontrell Mitchell had 104 yards and three touchdowns in 10 carries and scored on a 103-yard interception return for Santa Fe.

Brett Weigand had a career-best 67-yard punt for La Salle (0-2). San Marino is 1-1.

Ryan Kelley rushed for 75 yards on 16 carries with a touchdown for Serra (2-0), while Robert Munoz averaged 62 yards on seven punts. Peninsula is 0-1-1.

South Pasadena 31, Hoover 3
Kevin Tapia had two one-yard touchdown runs and quarterback Alex Christ was 14 of 25 for 159 yards passing and scored on a 23-yard run to lead visiting South Pasadena (1-1) over Hoover (0-2). Hoover’s Brandon Salumbides caught eight passes for 92 yards.

St. Anthony 12, Verbum Dei 0
Maurice Berry rushed for 189 yards on 27 carries and one touchdown and returned a fumble 25 yards for another score to lead host St. Anthony (1-1) over Verbum Dei (1-1).

St. Bernard 35, Torrance 34
Marcus Crockett helped host St. Bernard (1-1) come back from a 12-point deficit with a 259-yard, five-touchdown performance. He ran for scores of 88, 11, 62, 18, and five yards.Torrance (0-2) led, 34-22, in the third quarter, but Crockett had two final touchdowns to give the Vikings the win.

St. Bonaventure 41, Hart 34
The win did not give Ventura St. Bonaventure a Southern Section title, but the Seraphs’ upset of Newhall Hart at Moorpark College might have been the program’s biggest victory.

St. Bonaventure (2-0) won a fourth consecutive section title last season, but the Seraphs’ lone loss was a 31-6 drubbing by Hart that snapped a school-record 43-game winning streak.

Quarterback Brian Stevens had struggled through a 10 for 26 and three-interception performance in the loss to Hart, but he completed 23 of 31 passes for 285 yards and two touchdowns Friday.

Stevens’ second touchdown pass came on a short completion to running back Matt Lee, who raced untouched to the end zone to complete a 44-yard scoring play. The score gave St. Bonaventure, the No. 16-ranked team in the Southland by The Times, a 34-14 lead with 5:24 to play in the third quarter.

Lee, a junior, rushed for 211 yards and three touchdowns in 39 carries. He also had four receptions for 75 yards and a touchdown.

Hart (0-2) narrowed the deficit to 34-21 with 9:08 left to play when Sean Norton threw a 24-yard touchdown pass to Kevin Cicone.

The Indians, who won four consecutive section titles between 1998-2001, closed to 34-27 with 3:55 to play when Evan Surratt caught a 30-yard touchdown pass from Norton.

St. Bonaventure, which won the Division IV title last year, recovered the ensuing onside kick by Hart and extended its lead to 41-27 when Andrez Morales ran 18 yards for a touchdown.

Norton, who suffered a rib injury in a 20-17 season-opening loss to Los Alamitos, completed 20 of 39 passes for 389 yards and five touchdowns. But Hart, ranked third by The Times, was held to 32 yards rushing.

St. Paul 23, Redondo 9
Miguel Rios threw for 103 yards on five of seven passing and two touchdowns and Dwight Tardy rushed for 152 yards on 25 carries to lead visiting St. Paul (1-1) over Redondo (1-1).

Temple City 34, Alhambra 7
Tailback Kenji Morinaga rushed 16 times for 116 yards and two first-quarter touchdowns to lead host Temple City (2-0) over Alhambra (1-1). His touchdown runs were three and nine yards.

Westlake 31, S.O. Notre Dame 7
Let there be no doubt about the toughness and fire of Westlake Village Westlake quarterback Rudy Carpenter, who passed for 203 yards, ran for 57 yards and provided unyielding leadership in a nonleague victory over defending Southern Section Division III champion Sherman Oaks Notre Dame on Friday night.

Westlake (2-0), ranked No. 12 by The Times, scored 24 consecutive points in the second half after a 7-7 halftime tie to rout the seventh-ranked Knights (1-1), who were held to one first down in the final 24 minutes.

It’s understandable why teams in the Marmonte League made such a commotion after Carpenter transferred last February from Newbury Park, where he was the league’s top offensive player last season.

He’s 6 feet 3, 190 pounds, fearless and relentless. He didn’t seem fazed or bothered by Notre Dame’s constant pass rush.

He scored one touchdown, passed for another and at one point tried to hurdle a Notre Dame defender. He raised his voice to shout at a Westlake teammate who didn’t provide a block. He completed 16 of 25 passes, including a 15-yard touchdown to Marcus Maddocks.

“The thing he showed was a lot of competitiveness,” Westlake Coach Jim Benkert said. “They brought everyone and he was back there making a lot of plays.”

Westlake turned two fumbles and an interception deep in Notre Dame territory into touchdowns in the second half. The Knights, in losing for the first time since the 2001 season, could not pass the ball effectively at any point. Quarterbacks Jim Welker and Garrett Green were a combined three of 12 for 37 yards.

Green scored Notre Dame’s only touchdown on a 91-yard run in the second quarter, the second-longest run in school history.

As if a game matching two top 25 teams wasn’t enough motivation for the players, USC Coach Pete Carroll was standing beyond the end zone and on the sideline offering additional inspiration.

“It’s a great game,” Carroll said just after halftime.

Carroll was watching USC-bound tight end Jimmy Miller of Westlake, who had a sack and caught a 27-yard touchdown pass that was nullified because of a holding penalty.

Kyle Gran had a 55-yard touchdown run and helped stop a late two-point conversion for Crenshaw in helping the Matadores to a victory in a defensive struggle at Crenshaw.

Crenshaw cut into La Mirada’s 14-6 lead in the fourth quarter when Rickie Collin scored on a three-yard touchdown run with 6:47 left. However, Gran pressured Cougar quarterback Anthony Moore on the conversion try and forced an incomplete pass.

Crenshaw (1-1) got the ball back with 2:10 remaining but Gran intercepted Moore’s pass at the 38-yard line to clinch the win.

Gran rushed for 112 yards in 20 carries. He also had an 18-yard touchdown reception in the second quarter.

Palisades 16, Santa Monica 12
Andre Harris rushed for 113 yards and one touchdown in 24 carries and Dylan Cohen completed five of 10 passes for 54 yards and ran for a 17-yard score for Palisades (2-0). Cohen also kicked a 22-yard field goal. Anthony Simmons rushed for 128 yards, including a 32-yard touchdown run, in 12 carries for Santa Monica (0-2).

Venice 17, Loyola 13
Venice scored a major victory Friday night, but it was a bigger triumph for City Section football.

Venice held off a fierce rally by Los Angeles Loyola to hold on for the victory over the Cubs at Santa Monica College.

It was vindication for City Section schools, which have long been an afterthought compared to Southern Section schools in the heirarchy of Southern California high school football. It was a more convincing statement considering the team Venice defeated.

Loyola, a four-time major-division champion that is ranked No. 6 by The Times, is no ordinary Southern Section team. It is traditionally one of the best and most respected teams in the Southland.

“This is a huge win for our program and for all of City football,” said Coach Angelo Gasca of Venice (2-0), which is ranked No. 19. “I grew up knowing a lot about Loyola. I knew what we were facing tonight.”

Loyola (1-1) trailed, 10-0, at halftime and 17-0 after Byron Ellis scored from two yards with 7 minutes 19 seconds left in the third quarter.

The Cubs stormed back and pulled to within 17-13 with 7:01 left in the game when Trason Bragg scored on a two-yard run.

Loyola’s defense forced Venice to punt after three plays on its next possession and took over at the Venice 30-yard line after a poor punt with almost five minutes to play.

Two plays later, however, Venice linebacker Oton Garcia stripped the ball from Bragg and Erick Lobos recovered the fumble for Venice with 4:39 left. The Gondoliers picked up two first downs and ran 12 plays to run out the clock.

Nathan Barnett and Derrick Clark ran in for scores as Dana Hills (1-1) won for only the second time in 12 games. The Dolphins allowed their only touchdown on the final play of the game, a 34-yard pass from Mike Anderson to Jason Gill for Woodbridge (0-2).

Dominguez rushed for 275 yards and rolled past Tustin at Tustin High. Running back Dion Bell had 138 yards and two touchdowns in 14 carries and quarterback Terry Mixon added 44 yards and a touchdown in seven carries. He threw scoring passes of three and 26 yards, both to Darryl Crummie. On defense, Mixon had two fumble recoveries and an interception as Dominguez (2-0) held Tustin (0-2) to 250 yards.
