After 27 years in power, the president of Burkina Faso, Blaise Compaore, bowed to popular anger and announced Friday that he was stepping down after a failed attempt to seek a fifth term in office. Compaore, one of Africa’s longest serving leaders, made the announcement on national television after initially trying to brush off mass protests and opposition calls for him to quit, insisting he would stay in power for another year while a transitional government was installed.
