A's ace Sonny Gray scratched because of a sore back

Oakland ace Sonny Gray, a Cy Young contender who leads the American League with a 2.06 earned-run average, was unable to start Thursday against the AL East-leading Blue Jays in Toronto because of a sore back. Athletics Manager Bob Melvin said Gray (12-4) also would not be able to start Friday in Baltimore but might be able to pitch sometime during the weekend series against the Orioles.
