Mountain High brings rail jam (with snow!) to streets of Wrightwood

It's way too early for Mountain High ski resort in Wrightwood to have snow, but the ski resort plans to truck some in for an Oct. 4 rail jam in town.

The forecast for Wrightwood calls for snow — about 40 tons of it. The mountain town will go directly from fall to winter on Oct. 4 when Mountain High ski resort covers the streets in white for a pre-season snowboard competition.

Technically it’s not snow but ice that’s chipped and sculpted into features for the Buck Strikes Back rail jam. It takes workers about five hours to transform the town’s Pine Street into an arena with a 20-foot starting ramp and a rail, boxes, stair set and finishing jib, a Mountain High news release says.

But not just anyone can trick out in the winter arena. The competition is open to pros and known riders as well as season pass holders. Passes for the 2014-15 season will be on sale for $299 for adults and $249 for 7- to 12-year-olds.

For those who don’t plan to board, there’s a vendor village where boarders can check out new equipment, a ski and snowboard swap at Mountain Outhouse where you can buy and sell gear, a chili cook-off and salsa contest and live entertainment.

The snowboard fest runs 1-5 p.m., and Mountain High sponsors an after-party during which its new snowboard film “Montage” will be shown at the Yodeler at 6046 Park Drive.
