Flying, music and the Year of the Dog are all part of next weekend’s festivities.

San Diego

Get out in nature, go on bird-watching walks and see live bird presentations at the San Diego Bird Festival at the Marina Village Conference Center in Mission Bay. Join family-focused walks on Sunday. The festival benefits the San Diego Audubon Society.

Pahrump, Nev.

At the fifth Pahrump Hot Air Balloon Festival, 60 miles west of Las Vegas, visitors can see more than 30 balloons, listen to music, watch a rodeo and eat. A dozen balloons will synchronize their movements to music in the “hot-air-balloon glow show” at 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday evenings.

Alhambra

Celebrate at the 27th Alhambra Lunar New Year Festival on Valley Boulevard with Asian foods, arts and crafts and Chinese performers on stage dancing, singing, playing music and demonstrating martial arts. Kids can have fun at the petting zoo. Because this is the Year of the Dog, participants can visit a dog-adoption area.

Long Beach

It’s a music fest at the 16th African-American Festival at the Aquarium of the Pacific with jazz musicians, Mardi Gras second-line musicians, West African dancers, interactive drum circles, and hip-hop and break dancers. Guests can also listen to West African storytellers and peruse arts and crafts.

Glendale/Los Angeles

At the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra’s world premiere of “Petrichor” by L.A.-based composer Ellen Reid, musicians will play from around the hall, not just on stage, giving audience members surround-sound. (“Petrichor” refers to the scent after the first rain after a drought.)

When: 8 p.m. Feb. 24, Alex Theatre, Glendale; 7 p.m. Feb. 25, Royce Hall, Los Angeles.

Ventura

Grammy Award-winning jazz-fusion artists Tom Scott and the L.A. Express, Grammy-nominated singer Perla Batalla, and local artists will perform at the Concert for Ventura in Mission Park. The concert is designed to thank first responders and boost the spirits of the community after the Thomas fire.
