Australia: Hikes explore Flinders Ranges National Park

Trek through rugged mountains with creeks, gorges, wildlife and cultural sites by day and return to a comfortable cabin each night on three- and five-day walking tours in southern Australia (the state of South Australia).

The guided hikes explore Flinders Ranges National Park, about 280 miles north of Adelaide. Highlights include Wilpena Pound, a vast valley floor and natural rock formation; ancient art sites of the Adnyamathanha Aboriginal people; the 3,841-foot-high St. Mary Peak; and other scenic overlooks. The hikes, up to eight hours long, are designed for people with good fitness levels who can cover up to 13 miles per day. They are not recommended for children.

Dates: The trips are offered on various dates June 3-Oct. 16.

Price: About $1,193 per person, double occupancy, for three-day tours; $1,945 for five-day tours. Single-occupancy rates are $1,349 per person for three-day tours; $2,204 for five-day tours. (Prices may vary by the currency exchange rate.) The price includes cabin accommodations; walking guide and support staff; and three meals per day. It does not include airfare to Australia or travel to the trekking area, backpacks, personal items or alcoholic beverages. Upgrades to “eco-villas” with private verandas are available at extra cost.
