The California ski season kicks off today (Thursday) with the opening of Mammoth Mountain, one of the state’s premier resorts.

Going to Mammoth? Here’s what you’ll find: At least three lifts will be open – 1, 6 and 11. That includes six trails, including some beginner terrain, over 1,000 vertical feet. Also open will be five jibs, a jump and a small playground area in Main Park.

The first 100 skiers Thursday will receive fee lift tickets. Coffee and cocoa will be served at the Broadway Express this morning while supplies last.

In honor of its 60th anniversary, Mammoth is offering $60 lift tickets and $60 off some stays through Monday.

The forecast calls for clear skies and highs in the low 50s through the weekend. Subtropical storms are expected to bring more snow next week. Currently, there is 10 inches of packed powder at the Main Lodge and 18 inches at the summit.

Among the highlights of the coming season will be qualification for the U.S. snowboarding half-pipe and slope-style teams, in which a short series of five events will decide who makes the team. The fifth, final and deciding event is Jan. 17-19, which is Martin Luther King Jr. weekend.

Mammoth’s neighbor to the north, June Mountain, opens Dec. 13, after being shuttered last season. Kids will ski free all season long.
