Next time you go to Germany, consider staying on a tall ship or in a hayloft. The German tourism office has created a free budget guide that lists lodgings for as little as 40 euros ($52) a night at places all over the country, from big cities to parklands and forests.

The deal: Great Holidays on a Small Budget is available for download at the German National Tourist Office’s website. The 134-page guide provides locations and prices for travelers who want to stay on and/or off the beaten path.

For 30 euros (about $40) a night, you can stay in a hayloft at Hotel-Pension Ferienhof Dittrichs Erben in Radebeul near Dresden (bring your own sleeping bag), or nod off on the 80-year-old tall ship Schulschiff Deutschland in Bremen.

There are plenty of standard places to stay too. The Smart Stay Hostel Munich City charges 44.50 euros ($58) for a double with a bathroom and 14.90 ($19) for a spot in a multi-bed room. And stays in the Thuringer Forest start at 32 euros ($42) for a double at Thuringer Klosshotel ‘Goldene Henne’ in Arnstadt.

When: The download is available indefinitely.

Tested: I found this brochure easy to download and easy to navigate; it’s a great guide for college kids heading abroad too. On the download page, look for other free guides, such as the UNESCO World Heritage Guide to Germany.
