Funny business will rock Baja, Mexico, this fall when the first Cabo Comedy Festival kicks off Oct. 2.

The five-day event, which will be held at area nightclubs, will feature stand-up headliners and include a best-newcomer competition made up of opening act-level performers.

The event is being produced by Los Angeles-based Zaring Group, and is being supported by the Mexico Tourism Board and the state of Baja.

“The Cabo Comedy Festival will shine the spotlight of the entertainment industry on Los Cabos and Baja California Sur,” said Ruben Reachi, Baja secretary of tourism, “It will bring fans from around the world. We are excited to lend our support.”

The festival will include panel discussions on the business of comedy with writers, producers and cast members, plus celebrity golf and poker tournaments, both of which will benefit DIF, a local children’s charity, and after-parties at Cabo nightclubs. The festival will culminate with an awards presentation and celebrity roast.

The Comedy Festival, which has the slogan “Where the land ends and the laughs begin” will take place in various venues, including the Hard Rock Café, Desperadoes and the Bahia Hotel.

“Cabo is already L.A.’s playground,” said John Zaring, the festival’s promoter. “It’s the perfect place for a festival that’s been built to fill a void in the industry and be a premiere destination for comedy fans.”

A highlight of the weekend will be bestowing the “Giant of Comedy” award to Improv founder and industry legend Budd Friedman, who is celebrating 50 years of his iconic comedy club brand.

Tickets cost $20 per show.
