Bermuda: Divers can hunt for lost Civil War ship

Share

Scuba divers interested in immersing themselves in history as well as the deep blue sea will want to head to Bermuda this fall for an unusual adventure.

As part of the four-day excursion Oct. 24-28, divers can search for a missing Civil War gunrunner, the Roanoke, which was abandoned and burned in 1864 off the coastal island town of St. George’s.

Besides two Roanoke dives, participants will also explore the wrecks of Confederate gunrunners, the Mary-Celestia and the Montana/Nola. They can also visit the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute, the National Museum of Bermuda and the Rogues and Runners Museum.

Divers will also have the opportunity to meet noted Bermuda diver Teddy Tucker and Dr. Philippe Rouja, Bermuda’s custodian of historic wrecks.

Dive Bermuda is offering three packages at the Fairmont Southampton for divers involved in the Roanoke search: one diver, $3,346; one diver and one guest, $2,203 per person; and two divers, $2,783 per person. All three packages include an orientation, three days of diving, box breakfasts and lunches, three dinners, transfers to dives and taxes and gratuities.
