Your Scene: United Artists theater in downtown Los Angeles
Times reader Scott Broadhurst shot this photo of the Spanish Gothic-style United Artists theater in downtown Los Angeles, as reflected from the sleek California Market Center building across the street. Broadhurst titled this photo “Reflections of the Past.”
The theater at 937 S. Broadway was built by the founders of United Artists Pictures (Mary Pickford, Charles Chaplin, Douglas Fairbanks and D.W. Griffith) as a venue for movie premieres. It opened the day after Christmas 1927 and enjoyed many decades as a movie theater. In 1989, it ceased operations as a movie theater, and it now serves as the home of Los Angeles University Cathedral.
