Southern California: Mountain High expects to reopen this weekend

Mountain High, which has been closed since Nov. 27, is hoping to reopen this weekend.

“The forecast is for a cold and powerful storm to hit Southern California,” said spokeswoman Kim Herman. “With temperatures in the 20s, we should be able to make tons of snow on top of the six to 10 inches of natural snow that should be falling.”

She said the Wrightwood resort, which has the closest skiing and snowboarding to Los Angeles, could reopen as early as Friday.

Ben Smith, Mountain High’s general manager, said the resort has been waiting for a change in the weather.

“With fresh snow and the best snow-making conditions of the season Mountain High will be open just in time for the holidays,” he said.

Daily operating hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Once Mountain High reopens, he said it will offer night skiing from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Wednesdays through Sundays. Early-season ticket rates are $45 for adults and $25 for children ages 7 to 12. Kids 6 and under ski free with a paying adult. (These rates are subject to change and will increase as Mountain High opens more terrain.)

The resort’s Winter Sports School is currently offering a $99 Early-Season Private Special featuring a lift ticket, rentals and one-hour private lesson for both children and adults. Normally, this costs $140.
