THE BEST WAY TO HANA, HAWAII
From LAX, United, American and Delta offer nonstop service to Maui, and United, Hawaiian and Alaska offer connecting service (change of plane). Restricted round-trip fares begin at $852. From Maui's Kahului Airport, take Highway 36E to Highway 360 to Hana, about 50 scenic miles, most of it winding, two-lane road. Don't attempt it at night.

Hana Kai Maui, 4865 Uakea Road, Hana; (800) 346-2772, http://www.hanakai.com. Accommodations in low-rise buildings overlooking a black sand beach. No pool or air conditioning. Rates start at $195 a night, double occupancy.
WHERE TO EAT
Hana Ranch Restaurant, 5031 Hana Highway, Hana; (808) 270-5280 (no website). It's crowded because most bus tours stop here, not because the food is special.
