Getting there
From LAX, connecting service to Stockholm (change of planes) is available on Swiss, Lufthansa, Air France, KLM and British Airways. Restricted round-trip fares begin at $1,153.

Waxholmsbolaget operates boats from Stromkajen opposite the Grand Hotel in Stockholm to Gruvbryggan in Uto every day, departing in the morning. Round trip about $22 (children younger than 7 ride free). Tickets can be purchased on board.

Where to stay
Uto Vardshus, 504-20-300, fax 504-20-301, https://www.uto-vardshus.se . The kvarnvillan (windmill) house where we stayed is $233 per night, including breakfast, May-September. The wedding suite in the 17th century stenhotellet (stone house) is the same price. Vardshus cabins begin at $116 May-September. Beds at the 24-room Vardshus Youth Hostel are $29 per night.

Where to eat
In the Vardshus restaurant (see above), dinner — appetizer, entree and dessert — runs about $50 each, excluding alcoholic beverages.

At the Batshaket, the fish restaurant at the end of Alo, 501-574-63, prices for the bento box (which feeds two) are $16-$22.50. Among the available fish: salmon, eel, gravlax and shrimp, some smoked and some in marinade.

At the Dannekrogen, 501-57-079, our Thai soup was $15. Entrees $19-$27.
