The West: 5 best summer hotel deals for less than $250

Expect to pay a little more for your hotel room this summer. That’s the word from Hotwire, which notes that room rates on the company’s website are running about 7% higher than last year. But summer also can mean savings, especially if you don’t mind hanging at the pool with the off-season crowd.

These five hotels in the West allow you to sample luxury without an epic wallet bust. Prices exclude tax and fees; offers are based on availability.

Ritz-Carlton Rancho Mirage

Ritz-Carlton is back in Rancho Mirage. The company first opened the 224-room hotel in 1988 and reclaimed it with a splashy official opening Thursday. Three pools and a huge spa could take the sting out of summer heat for those who want to sample the redone rooms.

Best deal: $229 a night includes Wi-Fi, valet parking and a $50 resort credit from June 15 to Sept. 18.

Westgate Hotel

“Old-world charm on steroids,” one TripAdvisor reviewer gushes about the Westgate Hotel in San Diego. Indeed, the hotel with very European decor marks four decades with Grand America Hotels & Resorts this year -- and offers travelers a second night at $40.

Best deal: $299 a night and $40 for a second night, good through Dec. 31.

Waldorf Astoria Park City

The Waldorf Astoria Park City in Park City, Utah, at the base of Canyons Resort is a hot ski destination in winter. In summer, you can add on hiking, mountain bicycling or zip-lining while enjoying the low room rate.

Amara Resort & Spa

Boutique hotelier Kimpton plans to complete a “refresh” of the 100 rooms at the Amara Resort and Spa in Sedona, Ariz., by the end of June. This is a good place to marvel at the red-rock grandeur of Oak Creek and take advantage of a $100 spa credit.

Best deal: $249 for a room that comes with a $100 spa credit.

The Hotel Union Square in San Francisco and other properties in the Personality Hotels brand often have quirky offers. Case in point: They’re taking a jab at Airbnb with an “Air P&H” rate that takes 25% off the rack rate and throws in a $10 Starbucks card too.
