California: Snowcreek revamp includes snowboard tramps

Snowcreek Athletic Club has re-opened to public

When broken pipes swamped Snowcreek Athletic Club in Mammoth Lakes last November, co-owner Ralph Lockhart didn’t just wring the place out and put it back together. He re-invented it.

Think training trampolines for snowboarders and an L.A.-quality sushi bar for just about everyone. The Snowcreek Athletic Club had always been a good place for skiers to take a post-slope soak, or for locals to shoot some hoops. Now it offers an updated look thanks to the almost $2-million renovation.

Getting the most buzz, probably, are the floor-level trampolines where snowboarders can practice tricks, with safety harnesses and 20-foot ceilings. They are available to boarders of all levels.

Snowcreek Athletic Club is open to the public seven days a week, 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekends. All-day passes for the public are $20 and allow guests to come and go. Guests of Snowcreek Resort Vacation Rentals or Mammoth Reservations receive free access to the club.

Fitness director Karrie McFadden says the training tramps, run by Mammoth Alpine Trampolines, cost extra. For insurance purposes, users must have an annual AAU membership ($16 for children, and $24 for adults). First-timer orientation is $35 more. Two-hour bounce sessions start at $25.

Guests will find that nearly everything in the re-opened facility -- including drinking fountains and basketball floors -- was replaced. The layout changed and the weight room was overhauled. Pilates, dance and yoga classes now have dedicated spaces.

The club also features a spa, walking paths, a full gym and five outdoor tennis courts.

The Bistro Restaurant offers up a reasonably priced menu, including miso soup ($2.95), yellowtail roll ($3.95) and spicy tuna roll ($4.95).
