Yellowstone: Explore mud pots and track wolves on this family tour
Yellowstone National Park covers 3,472 square miles in Wyoming and parts of Montana and Idaho -- a lot to explore on a family vacation. The Yellowstone Assn. Institute and Xanterra Parks & Resorts have joined up to offer a tour with kids in mind that breaks down the vast parkland.
Yellowstone for Families is designed for parents and children between 8 and 12 years old. It includes five days of activities -- animal tracking, wildlife viewing, painting, photography and hiking -- with a naturalist guide.
The tour begins with a hike to look for bear, elk, bison and wolves in the northern part of the park. Next comes a geology lesson amid geysers (Old Faithful, of course), mud pots and hot springs for closeups, and a visit to the park’s Grand Canyon. Hikes are easy (3 miles or so), and daily picnic lunch is provided.
Participants spend two nights at Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel at the park’s north gate and two nights at Old Faithful Snow Lodge and Cabins or Grant Village near the south entrance.
When: The package is offered Mondays through Fridays, and Fridays through Tuesdays from June 2 to Aug. 15.
Price: $2,828 for two adults and two children. It includes lodging for four nights, daily breakfast and box lunch, ground transportation, activities and evening programs. Airfare to and from Yellowstone is extra.
