Body mass index, or BMI, calculates an individual's weight in relation to their height and activity level to assess whether they are at a healthy weight. For most people, BMI is also a reliable indicator of body fat but may not be accurate for athletes or muscular individuals. Higher levels of body fat are linked to life-threatening diseases including heart disease, diabetes and hypertension.
