A Pakistani Muslim reads the Koran outside a mosque in Karachi, Pakistan, on the first day of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan. Ramadan is Islam's most sacred month, during which devout Muslims observe a dawn-to-dusk fast and attend special evening Taraweeh congregations, during which the Koran is recited. During the month, eating, drinking, sex and smoking in public places is banned and restaurants are forbidden to serve food during the fasting hours.
