Oscars 2012: Live coverage of awards that make or break your ballot

The 84th Academy Awards on Sunday aren’t just about honoring the top films, actors, directors and writers of last year, of course. The show encompasses 24 categories, including disciplines such as art direction and visual effects as well.
Though you may not have paid attention to who did the production design and set decoration on, say, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows -- Part 2” when the credits rolled by in the theater, you will Sunday night -- if only for the reason that the success or failure of your Oscar ballot could depend on it.
As the Oscars unfold in Hollywood starting at 5:30 p.m. Pacific, check back for live updates of the winners in eight categories: art direction, cinematography, costume design, film editing, makeup, sound editing, sound mixing and visual effects.

5:43 p.m.:
CINEMATOGRAPHY
‘Hugo’s’ Robert Richardson won the Oscar for cinematography. Richardson competed against ‘The Artist’s’ Guillaume Schiffman, ‘The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo’s’ Jeff Cronenweth, ‘The Tree of Life’s’ Emmanuel Lubezki and ‘War Horse’s’ Janusz Kaminski. Lubezki, the favorite, won the American Society of Cinematographers’ top award earlier in February.
5:45 p.m.:
ART DIRECTION
‘Hugo,’ which came into Sunday night with a leading 11 nominations, won the Academy Award for art direction. Production designer Dante Ferretti and set decorator Francesca Lo Schiavo have won two previous Oscars together. ‘Hugo’ beat out “The Artist,” ’Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows -- Part 2,’ ‘Midnight in Paris’ and ‘War Horse.’
5:54 p.m.:
COSTUME DESIGN
‘The Artist’s’ Mark Bridges was awarded the Oscar for costume design. Bridges competed against ‘Anonymous’ ’ Lisy Christl, ‘Hugo’s’ Sandy Powell, ‘Jane Eyre’s’ Michael O’Connor and ‘W.E.’s’ Arianne Phillips.
5:56 p.m.:
MAKEUP
‘The Iron Lady’s’ Mark Coulier and J. Roy Helland won the Academy Award for makeup. The film starring Meryl Streep as British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher won against “Albert Nobbs” and ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows --Part 2.’
6:23 p.m.:
FILM EDITING
‘The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo’s’ Kirk Baxter and Angus Wall won the Academy Award for film editing, their second consecutive win in the category. They competed against ‘The Artist’s’ Anne-Sophie Bion and Michel Hazanavicius, ‘The Descendants’ ’ Kevin Tent, ‘Hugo’s’ Thelma Schoonmaker and ‘Moneyball’s’ Christopher Tellefsen. Last year, Baxter and Wall won the award for their work on “The Social Network.”
6:25 p.m.
SOUND EDITING
‘Hugo’s’ Philip Stockton and Eugene Gearty won the Oscar for sound editing. The film edged out ‘Drive,’ ‘The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo,’ ‘Transformers: Dark of the Moon’ and ‘War Horse’ in the category.
6:27 p.m.:
SOUND MIXING
‘Hugo’ won the Academy Award for sound mixing. Tom Fleischman and John Midgley received the award for their work on the Martin Scorsese-directed film. “Hugo” beat out ‘The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo,’ ‘Moneyball,’ ‘Transformers: Dark of the Moon’ and ‘War Horse.’
6:55 p.m.:
VISUAL EFFECTS
‘Hugo’ won the Academy Award for visual effects, with the honors going to Rob Legato, Joss Williams, Ben Grossman and Alex Henning. It competed against ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows — Part 2,’ ‘Real Steel,’ ‘Rise of the Planet of the Apes’ and ‘Transformers: Dark of the Moon.’
