Dozens of homes have been lost throughout San Diego County, although firefighters have been unable to nail down an accurate count because the fires have been too volatile for assessment teams to enter the affected areas, said Maurice Luque, spokesman for San Diego Fire and Rescue.

‘It’s been a challenging fire because of the winds,’ Luque said. ‘This is a very volatile and uncertain situation.’

Luque said the fires were likely to be worse than the Cedar fire of October 2003 because of the high Santa Ana winds and the dry vegetation.

‘This year the vegetation has been the driest it’s been in 90 years,’ he said.

The fires could spread all the way to the coast, to La Jolla and north, he added.
