On Highway 78 East near the San Diego Wild Animal Park, fires were raging on both sides of the road. In the rural area of scattered homes, some of the houses were engulfed in flames. Any firefighters in the vicinity appeared to be retreating, and there were no aircraft dumping water.

Past the Wild Animal Park, the road to Julian threads through a narrow, winding canyon, which was lined by fire on either side. Any firetrucks in the area were heading in the opposite direction.
