An all-night standoff in El Cajon between a SWAT team and a domestic violence suspect ended early Wednesday after police used tear gas to subdue the sword-wielding man, police officials said.
Police had gone to an apartment complex in the San Diego suburb Tuesday night when a woman reported being beaten by her husband. While the woman was taken to a hospital, police ordered the husband to surrender. He refused, police said.
People in nearby apartments were evacuated. Shortly after 5 a.m., after becoming convinced the man would not surrender, police used tear gas to gain entry into the apartment and fired a sponge-like round at him, forcing him to drop his swords, police said, and he was arrested.
