Blake Hyepock had never started a high school football game at any level until this season. That will happen when you’re Aaron Corp’s backup. Corp won two section titles in three season for Orange Lutheran.

But this is how far Hyepock has come: He threw 19 passes in the first half against Mission Viejo. He finished 16 of 23 for 223 yards with one interception.

And, as one of my peers in the pressbox said, ‘He’s not sick like he was when they played Servite the first time.’

When the Lancers played Servite and were beaten, 28-13 -- their only loss of the year -- Hyepock had been sidelined all week by the flu. Neither he, nor his coaches, used that as an excuse. Nevertheless, it was still the case.

This season he has completed 65% of his passes for 1.646 yards and 14 touchdowns with three interceptions. But for a guy who had to win the job this year competing against a sophomore teammate, Hyepock has emerged as one of the outstanding stories of the season.
