Loyola won the Division II boys’ title, but the biggest story was the performance of Loyola freshman Elias Gedyon, who finished fourth overall on the 2.91-mile course in 15:14, the fastest time ever by a freshman on the Mt. SAC layout. The previous best time belonged to Louis Quintana of Arroyo Grande, who ran 15:23 in 1987.

James Kostelnik was the top finisher for the Cubs, placing third overall in 15:13. Loyola totaled 55 points, easily defeating Newport Harbor (119).

Ayala, Santa Ana Foothill, Granite Hills, Mira Costa and Mater Dei also qualified for the state finals next Saturday at Woodward Park in Fresno.

Emmanuel Ngula of Vista del Lago was the overall winner in 15:07, leading the list of individual state qualifiers, which also includes Cody Schmidt of Redondo, Daniel Rosales of Apple Valley, Jose Alcantar of Hueneme and Ankur Joshi of Indio.
