Boys’ volleyball: City seeding committee has tough job on its hands

Granada Hills’ surprising sweep of Chatsworth on Monday not only gave the Highlanders a share of the West Valley League title, it’s also going to give the committee members headaches when they meet Tuesday to determine seedings for the 32-team City Section playoffs, which begin next Thursday.

Chatsworth appeared to be a lock for No. 1 after winning the Sylmar tournament last weekend, but Monday’s result is proof that even the Chancellors aren’t unbeatable. The question is whether a late-season loss should cost Chatsworth the No. 1 seed.

Chatsworth does hold the league tiebreaker over Granada Hills, but is the Chancellors’ body of work enough to warrant the top spot over Western League winner Palisades, which hasn’t lost a best-of-five match all season? And let’s not forget Granada Hills, Van Nuys, Sylmar, Venice and Carson -- each worthy of top 5 consideration.

One thing’s for sure: Chatsworth’s defeat makes for a more spirited debate.
