Daniel Slovis, a junior from El Camino Real, sank a 20-foot birdie putt on the third playoff hole to win the City Section Golf Championship on Wednesday at Griffith Park’s Harding Course.

Slovis shot a final round 70 to make up three strokes on first-round leader Brennan Amirkhizi of Taft and force sudden death. Both players missed 15-footers for birdie on the first hole and birdied the second. At the par 4 third hole, Slovis birdied before Amirkhizi had a chance at his 20-footer for par.

‘It was a downhill putt but it looked pretty straight and I just trusted it,’ said Slovis, who led the Conquistadores to second place in the team competition last year behind Granada Hills. ‘Both of us hit some pretty good shots.’

Slovis and Amirkhizi tied at 143, one under par. For perspective, Palisades’ Ed Turner shot 153 to win the individual title in 1999. That score was not good enough to qualify for the Southern California Regionals this year.

Venice won its first boys’ team title with a two-day total of 745. Granada Hills (764) finished second to earn the section’s second regional berth.
