Jeff Steinberg, who built successful football programs at Ridgecrest Burroughs and Fontana Miller, coached Corona Santiago to a 35-3 season-opening win over Anaheim Esperanza.

‘It’s always nice to start a season with a positive,’ he said.

Steinberg was a terrific hire for Santiago. But he lives in Beaumont, and it takes 40 minutes without a lot of traffic to get to Santiago.

‘It’s going well,’ he said. ‘I’m hoping to make a move sometime in the next 25 years.’

What Santiago showed against Esperanza was a surprisingly strong defensive line, led by senior nose guard Eric Gorski.

Steinberg is known for his offense, but if Santiago develops a top defense, beware.

Next up is a game against La Quinta.
