Baseball: Two big upsets in Division 1

There were two major upsets in the Southern Section Division 1 playoffs on Tuesday.

No. 4-seeded JSerra was beaten by Riverside North, 3-0. Junior pitcher Jack Johnson threw a one-hitter.

South Coast League champion Lake Forest El Toro fell to Simi Valley, 4-2. Nick Vigo threw 2 2/3 innings of shutout relief, and Cole Acheronti had three hits for the Pioneers, who removed their top pitcher from the team, Levi Shordon, before the playoffs began but now find themselves in the quarterfinals.

Anaheim Esperanza came away with a 20-9 win over Newbury Park. The Aztecs trailed, 8-7, after four innings, then scored eight runs in the fifth and five in the sixth. Ryan Cooper had four hits on the day. Joe Christian hit two home runs for Newbury Park.
