Boys’ basketball: Loyola unveils another top guard in Trey Mason

Los Angeles Loyola was already loaded at the guard position, and then on Tuesday, the Cubs unveiled junior Trey Mason, who played junior varsity last season.

Mason, the son of former Arizona and Crescenta Valley standout Harvey Mason Jr., proceeded to make six three-pointers in the first half of a Fairfax tournament game against El Camino Real. He had 20 points in about 10 minutes of action. Loyola opened a 48-22 lead.

Loyola won, 82-47. The Cubs will play Santa Monica on Thursday at 7 p.m. in a quarterfinal game. Santa Monica defeatd Oaks Christian, 66-65. Jordan Mathews scored 24 points. Chass Bryan had 23 points for Oaks Christian.

The other quarterfinal Thursday at 8:30 p.m. will match Long Beach Poly and Alemany. Poly defeated Sherman Oaks Notre Dame, 77-56. Roschon Prince had 24 points for Poly. Kennedy Edwards scored 31 points for Notre Dame.

Wednesday’s quarterfinal schedule has Crespi playing Fairfax at 7 p.m., followed by Mater Dei-Dorsey at 8:30 p.m.

In the Dominguez tournament, first-round scores: Price 63, Long Beach Jordan 44; St. John Bosco 42, St. Anthony 29; Pacific Hills 65, Compton 64; Washington 105, Ontario 89.
