This weekend’s CIF state bowl championships are about to kick off at Home Depot Center in Carson and the first of two games today matches Modesto Central Catholic (13-2) against Solano Beach Santa Fe Christian in Division IV.

San Diego Section champion Santa Fe Christian (11-3) is led by quarterback Hunter Vaccaro, who ran for 165 yards in last week’s 30-28 regional win against Arcadia Rio Hondo Prep. The Eagles have won nine straight but will be heavy underdogs against the Sac-Joaquin Section champion.

Ray Lomas ran for 136 yards and Rey Vega added 122 yards on th ground in Central Catholic’s 42-12 blowout over Oakland McClymonds in last week’s north regional bowl game. The Raiders (13-2) have won 11 in a row since a nonleague 45-42 loss to Downey.

Southern California teams have won 17 of 26 games since the CIF state bowl championships began in 2006, but Northern California teams are favored in three of the five games this year. Another factor is the weather. It has begun to rain and the last time that happened in 2010, Northern California teams won four of the five games.

Kickoff is at 4 p.m. so log back on to Varsity Times Insider for scoring updates throughout the game.

The second game at 8 p.m. will pit Sac-Joaquin Section winner Granite Bay (11-3) against Southern Section Pac-5 Division winner Long Beach Poly (11-3) in Division I.
