Baseball: Tom Meusborn resigns at Chatsworth

Tom Meusborn, who took over Chatsworth’s baseball program in 1990 as a 28-year-old untested, unknown former junior varsity coach and turned the Chancellors into a national powerhouse, said Tuesday he has resigned as head coach to pursue college opportunities.

Meusborn guided the Chancellors to eight City Section Division I championships, 19 West Valley League titles and produced first-round draft choices Matt Dominguez and Mike Moustakas.

‘He took Chatsworth from what was considered a good baseball school to a national powerhouse,’ said Harvard-Westlake Coach Matt LaCour, who played and coached for Meusborn at Chatsworth. ‘You have a lot of people trying to copy a lot of things he’s done.’

Meusborn, 52, said he wants to give college coaching a chance now that his daughter is about to graduate from high school.

‘I’ve had a great run and lived a dream here,’ he said. ‘It’s a good time for me to try to get to the college level.’

The expected candidate to replace Meusborn, assistant Fred Pudrith, said he is not interested in becoming head coach. That means one of the City Section’s best jobs is now wide open for someone to gain.
