Des Moines Register Sold

WASHINGTON —
Gannett Co. Inc. announced today it has reached an “agreement in principle” to buy The Des Moines Register, the only statewide newspaper in Iowa, and the Jackson Sun in Tennessee, both owned by the Des Moines Register and Tribune Co., for $200 million.
The announcement was made by Allen H. Neuharth, chairman of Gannett, and David Kruidenier, chairman of the Register and Tribune Co., which is owned by members of the family of the late Gardner Cowles.
