Greek President Constantine Karamanlis resigned as head of state following the Socialist government’s refusal to back him for reelection in this week’s presidential balloting. Prime Minister Andreas Papandreou, who steered his ruling party away from Karamanlis, expressed his regret that the 70-year-old will not finish his term. The party, the Panhellenic Socialist Movement, voted unanimously in favor of supporting Christos Sartzetakis, a 56-year-old supreme court judge, for president. The action is seen as a move to the left.
