County’s Tall Club Is on the Short Side

Share

The Tall Club of Orange County is the “shortest” chapter of Tall Clubs International, according to spokeswoman Christine Mys. While most chapters have height minimums of 6 feet for women members and 6 foot 5 for men, Mys said the Orange County group, formed in 1962, admits women who stand at least 5 foot 10 and men as “short” as 6 foot 2.

Despite the relaxed standards, some prospective members have been known to stretch the truth about their height, Mys said. “Sometimes we measure new people at the monthly business meeting because some old members became upset when they noticed new members slipping in who just weren’t tall enough . . . . We actually use a tape measure now, but nobody seems to mind.”

In addition to business meetings, the 125-member chapter sponsors happy hours, volleyball, Sunday brunches and bridge games. On the second Friday of each month, the group has an “open” dance, at which “anyone, tall or short, is welcome,” Mys said. The dances, which start at 8 p.m. and usually attract about 300 people, take place at the Fountain Valley Community Center, 10200 Slater Ave., Fountain Valley.
