Fullerton : Owners of Dog Killed by Police Asking $100,000

Share

The owners of a dog that was shot and killed by a Fullerton police officer who was chasing a burglary suspect filed a $100,000 lawsuit Tuesday against the city, the Fullerton Police Department and the officer who fired the shot.

Robert and Mary Lee Burdett of Brea claim in their lawsuit that police invaded their privacy and that the killing of Dumpy, their 10-year-old mixed-breed dog, caused them emotional distress.

The dog was killed Jan. 1 when Officer Ron Gillett entered the Burdetts’ backyard in pursuit of a burglary suspect. Police said Gillett shot Dumpy when he confronted a police dog also involved in the pursuit.

An internal Police Department investigation of the incident absolved the department of responsibility.
