Sudanese police broke up an anti-government protest led by doctors in Khartoum, the capital, and foreign diplomats said a general strike was under way. Most reports of the unrest were obtained by diplomats outside the country, and efforts to reach Khartoum by telephone and telex were unsuccessful. Doctors have led agitation against President Jaafar Numeiri’s government since last Thursday, the third day of rioting that followed demonstrations over large price increases. At least five people have died in the violence.
