PERSONAL BAILOUT FOR BROKAW FARM

When Tom Brokaw reports on the nation’s farm problems, he could draw on some family experience.

About a year ago, the anchor of the “NBC Nightly News” bailed out his cousin Jim Brokaw, a farmer and state legislator from North Dakota, by buying 120 acres of farm land in North Dakota, thus saving the family homestead.

“Tom helped me out, or I’d be out in the cold, too,” said Jim Brokaw, who, like many farmers, suffered from overextended borrowing.

Tom Brokaw, who is not involved in the management of the farm and makes no money from it, declined to discuss details of the purchase.

“It really is a family, personal matter,” he said. “It was fairly undramatic anyway, something between the two of us.”
