American S&L; announced 300 more layoffs.
The Financial Corp. of America subsidiary said that the layoffs will be in the Stockton area, where it is headquartered, and that plans to build a new headquarters will probably be dropped. American employed about 2,500 people at 50 offices in the Stockton area before cutbacks started last year. The number of employees will shrink to about 1,900 by the end of the year, Chairman William J. Popejoy said. However, he told an audience at an economic outlook conference that American, the nation’s largest thrift institution, would rebound this year.
