Double Standard Decried for High School Sports

Share

I wholeheartedly support Pat Cannon’s contention that recruiting at the high school level is a cancer. However, a double standard exists in prep sports. Put simply, public schools can’t and private schools can.

As long as this double standard exists, and, as long as private schools are allowed to compete for CIF titles, the pressure will be on public school coaches to recruit. I believe the private schools should compete against only themselves in a separate playoff division.

I don’t say this out of personal animosity toward private schools. I graduated from one and have taught at two others. I just strongly feel that it doesn’t make sense to establish different rules for them but allow them to compete with public schools.

Pat Cannon is not a dinosaur, but those who continue to ignore this problem certainly appear to be ostriches!
